Frequently Asked Questions

How is the countdown calculated?

It takes the difference between now and your target moment and expresses it in days, hours, minutes and seconds, updating live. The calculation uses your device's clock and time zone, so if you are counting down to an event in another zone, enter the time as it will be where you are — otherwise you will be out by the offset, and by an extra hour if a daylight-saving change falls between now and then.

Why does the number of days sometimes look off by one?

Almost always because of how partial days are handled, or because a daylight-saving transition sits in the interval. A countdown from Monday afternoon to Friday morning is three full days plus some hours, not four — even though four dates are involved. If a clock change happens in between, one of those days is 23 or 25 hours long, which shifts the total. This calculator counts actual elapsed time rather than counting calendar squares.

Does it account for leap years?

Yes. Date arithmetic here works on real timestamps, so 29 February, leap seconds aside, is handled automatically. Counting down across a leap year gives an extra day compared with a naive 365-day-per-year calculation. The same applies to months of different lengths — counting in months is inherently ambiguous, which is why the result is expressed in days and smaller units.

Can I count down to something in the past?

Enter a past date and you get elapsed time rather than remaining time — useful for anniversaries, sobriety milestones, time since a launch, or how long a project has been running. The arithmetic is identical; only the direction changes.

How do I count down to a date in another time zone?

Convert the target to your own local time first, then enter that. A product launch at 09:00 Pacific is 17:00 in London during summer but 18:00 once the US and UK have both changed clocks — and there are weeks each year when the usual offset does not apply because the two regions switch on different dates. The World Clock calculator on this site does that conversion reliably.

Will the countdown keep running if I close the tab?

No — the countdown is computed live in your browser and stops when the page closes. Nothing is stored on a server and no reminder is sent. Reopening the page recalculates from the current moment, so the figure is always accurate when you return, but if you need an actual alert, use a calendar or reminder app instead.
