How is maximum heart rate estimated?

The best-known formula is 220 minus your age, which is simple and widely taught but quite imprecise — the standard deviation is around 10 to 12 beats per minute, so a 40-year-old's true maximum could plausibly be anywhere from 160 to 200. Better-validated alternatives include Tanaka (208 minus 0.7 times age) and Gulati for women (206 minus 0.88 times age). This calculator shows several so you can see how much they disagree.

Why do the formulas give different answers?

Because each was derived from a different population using different methods. The 220-minus-age rule has no clear original research basis and systematically overestimates for younger adults and underestimates for older ones. Tanaka came from a meta-analysis across a wider age range. Gulati was developed specifically from data on women, who had been under-represented in earlier work. None is authoritative for an individual — they are population averages.

How do I find my actual maximum heart rate?

Only a supervised maximal exercise test measures it directly, typically on a treadmill or bike with ECG monitoring in a clinical or sports-science setting. Field tests exist but push you to genuine exhaustion, which carries real risk if you have any cardiovascular condition or are unaccustomed to hard effort. Anyone over 40, or with symptoms, family history or known risk factors, should not attempt one without medical clearance.

What are heart-rate training zones for?

They translate a maximum into intensity targets. Roughly: 50–60% for very light activity, 60–70% for easy aerobic work and fat oxidation, 70–80% for aerobic development, 80–90% for threshold work, and 90–100% for maximal intervals. Most endurance programmes put the large majority of training in the lower zones and only a small fraction at the top, which surprises people who assume harder is always better.

Is resting heart rate more useful than maximum?

Arguably, for tracking your own fitness. Resting heart rate is easy to measure accurately, responds to training over weeks, and a rising trend can flag illness, poor sleep or overtraining. Maximum heart rate barely changes with fitness — it declines gradually with age regardless — so it is useful for setting zones but not for measuring progress. Heart-rate reserve, the gap between the two, underpins the more accurate zone formulas.

When should I be concerned about my heart rate?

Chest pain, unusual breathlessness, dizziness, fainting or palpitations during exercise warrant stopping and seeking medical advice, regardless of what the numbers say. A resting rate persistently above 100 or below 60 without being trained, or a heart rate that will not settle after exercise, is also worth raising. These formulas estimate a training reference; they are not a screen for cardiac problems.
