Frequently Asked Questions
Which US states have no sales tax?
Five states have no state-level sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, Alaska allows local municipalities to levy their own taxes (up to 7.5%). Tennessee has the highest combined state+local average at ~9.5%; Oregon and Montana average 0%.
What is the average US combined sales tax rate by state?
Combined state + local average rates in 2024: Louisiana ~9.56%, Tennessee ~9.55%, Arkansas ~9.44%, Washington ~9.42%, Alabama ~9.24%. California's state rate is 7.25% but local taxes push many areas to 10.25%+. Always check your specific city/county rate.
How do I remove sales tax from a price (reverse calculation)?
Net price = Gross price ÷ (1 + tax rate). Example: You paid $108 including 8% tax → $108 ÷ 1.08 = $100 pre-tax. A common mistake is simply subtracting 8% of the total ($108 × 0.08 = $8.64), which gives the wrong answer. Always divide by (1 + rate).
What is the difference between sales tax and VAT?
US sales tax is only collected at the final point of sale — businesses buying inputs pay it, but cannot reclaim it. VAT (used in the UK, EU, Australia as GST) is collected at every production stage, but businesses reclaim VAT paid on inputs via their VAT return. Both result in the same consumer cost, but VAT creates a self-auditing paper trail.
Is sales tax included in the listed price in the US?
Generally no — US prices are typically listed excluding tax, and tax is added at the register. This contrasts with the EU/UK, where all prices must by law include VAT. Canada also typically shows pre-tax prices with GST/PST added at checkout. Always check whether a price is "tax inclusive" or "tax exclusive."
