How do you write a decimal in words?

There are three correct readings and they are used in different places. Said aloud, you read the digits after the point one at a time: 12.75 is "twelve point seven five". As a fraction, you read the digits as a whole number and name the place value: 12.75 is "twelve and seventy-five hundredths". On a cheque, you round to two decimal places and write the fraction over 100: "Twelve and 75/100".

Is 0.075 seventy-five hundredths or seventy-five thousandths?

Thousandths. The place name depends on how many digits follow the decimal point, not on the digits themselves — three digits means thousandths. The leading zero is doing real work: it pushes the 7 and 5 into a smaller place. Reading 0.075 as "seventy-five hundredths" would make it ten times too large.

Why is 12.75 read as "point seven five" and not "point seventy-five"?

Because each digit after the point is spoken separately when you are dictating a number, so that it cannot be misheard. "Point seventy-five" is common in casual speech and is understood, but it is ambiguous once there are more digits — 12.756 has no sensible reading as tens and units. The fraction form, "twelve and seventy-five hundredths", is the one that groups the digits, and it names the place value so nothing is left to guess.

Are 0.5 and 0.50 written the same way in words?

Not as fractions. 0.5 is "five tenths" and 0.50 is "fifty hundredths". The two numbers are equal, but the written forms claim different precision: 0.50 says the value is known to the hundredth. That is why measurements keep trailing zeros and ordinary arithmetic drops them.

How do you write a decimal amount on a cheque?

Write the whole units in words, then "and", then the two-decimal remainder as a fraction over 100, then the currency: "Twelve and 75/100 Dollars". Anything past two decimal places is rounded, so 12.756 becomes 12.76 and reads "Twelve and 76/100". Use 00/100 when the amount is whole — leaving it blank invites alteration, which is the entire reason the words are there.

How do you say a decimal with a zero in it, like 1000.05?

Zeros after the point are spoken as "zero" (or "oh" informally), so 1000.05 is "one thousand point zero five". As a fraction it is "one thousand and five hundredths" — the zero is not read as a word there, because the place name already accounts for it.
