Where do the hyphens and commas go when writing numbers out?

British usage inserts 'and' before the final part of a number below a hundred — three hundred and twelve — while American usage typically omits it. Commas are not used inside a number written in words, though some legal styles add one between major groups for readability in very long figures. Why do cheques ask for the amount in both figures and words?

It is deliberate redundancy against fraud and misreading. Digits are easy to alter — a one becomes a four, a zero is appended — whereas an amount spelled out in words resists tampering because the change would be obvious. The two entries also catch honest slips. If the figures and the words disagree, most jurisdictions have a rule for which one governs: under the UK Bills of Exchange Act 1882, the sum written in words takes precedence. In practice, banks usually return the cheque rather than choose, so it is worth checking both before you hand it over.

Check writing format (and xx/100)

A cheque names the currency and always shows the cents as a fraction over 100, even when the amount is whole — a blank there invites alteration. Anything past two decimal places is rounded, and the rounding carries: 1.999 is "Two and 00/100", not "One and 100/100".
